It’s time for another coming as the New Orleans Saints are set to sign linebacker Deion Jones, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The former LSU playmaker joins a New Orleans linebacker room where the team wanted to add to for a depth perspective after having only a few moves in the room this offseason, albeit a series of consequential ones.
Jones is a hyper-athletic off-ball linebacker that pestered the Saints for a number of years as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, landing with the Saints, he will have spent time with each NFC South franchise in his career.
A New Orleans native, Jones is the latest of meaningful homecoming opportunities for the Saints.
The opportunity ahead of him is evident. His speed and athleticism will put him in line to immediately compete for a meaningful depth role with young backers Isaiah Stalbird, Jaylan Ford and Jackson Sirmon.
Veteran pass rusher Chris Rumph III made the transition to linebacker this offseason, but left practice early with an ankle injury on Friday.
The signing of Jones may not be tied to the injury, but should Rumph miss any time in the days ahead, the former Tiger will allow the Saints to manage their snaps with a new piece in the room.
Jones should be viewed as more than a camp body, however. His skill set, even at this point in his career, and experience could be very valuable in the locker room.
