LSU is preparing for its first scrimmage on Saturday, and the put the full pads on again Thursday morning.
It was another 12-minute viewing period for the media under the hot sunshine. Energy was up, and music was blaring.
Here were some objective observations.
- Winston Watkins was absent from practice for the third consecutive workout. I scanned the sidelines for him and did not see him anywhere. Matt Moscona reported Tuesday that Watkins participated in gold in the team drills after the media left on Tuesday.
- Trey’Dez Green (precaution), Jayce Brown and Jabari Mack were in gold “no contact” jerseys. Mack, after spending Tuesday practice working individually, did join the wide outs. Brown didn’t appear compromised and went first on a couple of route combinations.
- Yes, DJ Pickett was wearing No. 5 and working with the cornerbacks hours after news surfaced that Jayden Daniels had issued a cease and desist over the reissuance of his number.
Here were some on the subjective side.
- It’s great to see Whit Weeks flying around and leading drills again. He’s absolutely letting it rip through the linebacker drills and leading the team the way he should be. It was odd in the spring to see him standing there observing. He spoke about how tough that was when he was at SEC Media Days.
- Sam Leavitt didn’t move much, but he did do some half roll outs to dump the ball in the flat. Again, it’s not much, but he’s far from stationary. That was the first time in camp we’ve seen him move off platform to throw.
- LSU really looks the part at EDGE. Princewill Umanmielen is the only truly proven rusher in the group, but he’s far from the only imposing presence. Jordan Ross is listed as an inch taller and two pounds heavier (6’5″, 246), and Lamar Brown is a massive presence at 6-foot-4 and 295 pounds. Lane Kiffin praised Trenton Henderson this week as the fourth of that freshman defensive line group. He’s close to 250 pounds as well, and Dylan Carpenter is long and filled out. We’ll see what the production looks like from that group, but it’s a good-looking group even without Gabriel Reliford (injury) or Damien Shanklin (away from team).
