The second week of fall camp around the SEC is wrapping up for most teams. That means we are just three weeks away from games and most teams have finished their first scrimmage of the fall.
Here’s a quick look around the league to see what storylines were made in week two of fall camp.
LSU young D-Lineman pushing for playing time
This isn’t new. Plenty of people saw this coming as early as the spring. Still, the storyline continues to progress as fall camp continues. The freshman defensive lineman at LSU have a chance to be generational talents. Last week we spoke to center Braelin Moore and he had the same sentiment.
“Man, those guys are going to be crazy talented,” Moore said. “Their future is so bright. I’ve played in the ACC, played against good Clemson teams, played in the SEC. Those freshmen are developed more than some of the players I played in their fourth year.”
Earlier in the preseason there were bold predictions from around Baton Rouge that multiple freshmen could start on the defensive line this season ahead of some talented veterans. That almost seems like a certainty more than a hot take at this stage of camp.
Alabama faces rash of running back injuries
If there is one area that Alabama can’t afford to be injured, it’s in the run game. They’re not off to a great start.
Freshman five star EJ Crowell missed the Tide’s first scrimmage this past week because of a minor injury. In his place was another underclassmen who’s been turning heads in fall camp, AK Dear. Dear was another highly ranked blue chip recruit that has been playing his best ball since he arrived on campus during camp.
Dear suffered a more serious injury that will force him to miss the first month or so of the season. He was pushing for the starting spot along with Daniel Hill. Now, Alabama will have to rely on yet another freshman running back, Trae’shawn Brown, to fill in for the injured Dear and Crowell.
All of the backs are talented runners, but everyone knows the biggest issue for most freshmen at that position is pass protection and understanding assignments. Alabama is still three weeks away from their first game, and the run game is already a huge concern once again.
Cam Coleman still turning heads along with Arch Manning
Watching quarterbacks and receivers connect on routes versus air is probably a little silly to get excited about. But, we are in the business of being silly when it comes to watching Arch Manning and Cam Coleman’s chemistry in fall camp. These two look to be completely in sync and their offseason work has shown in some of the highlights Texas’ social media team has put out from fall camp.
Manning had himself a day earlier this week while he was mic’d up during practice. And, Coleman had yet another highlight reel catch in practice that sent social media into a stir.
