LSU Fall Camp Report: August 18

The full pads were on Tuesday night as final week of Fall Camp continues.

School begins next week, and LSU will turn its focus to Clemson. For now, it’s another physical few practices leading up to a Saturday scrimmage.

GOLD JERSEYS

Offensively, Jabari Mack, Malik Elzy and Trey’Dez Green wore gold “no contact jerseys.” All three participated fully in the individual periods, and I did not see any additional protective gear on any of them.

Green led the tight ends through the route tree. Roman Mothershed again worked with the tight ends. He’s got the most size (6’5″, 208) in the wide receiver group, and he might be a little down the pecking order there. He might be able to help at tight end.

Elzy worked toward the front of the lines, and Mack worked toward the back.

DJ Pickett was in gold. He participated fully and showed no signs of any issues.

BERRY’S BACK

Well, “back” might be a stretch. Harlem Berry was not with the running backs during individuals. He worked off to the side with an assistant coach. Berry made a couple of explosive plays on Saturday in the scrimmage but missed the media portion of Monday’s practice.

His return to the practice field is similar to Mack who spent a workout or two on the side and eventually joined his teammates. With two and a half weeks between now and kickoff versus Clemson, just seeing Berry in attendance was a great sign.

LEAVITT LONGBALLS

LSU works a ton of back shoulder throws which can make it hard to determine if each individual throw was an intentional back shoulder throw or just behind the receiver. A few throws early in practice looked a little bit off the mark.

However, Leavitt’s deep ball accuracy on Tuesday night was largely exceptional. He dropped back-to-back passes in the bucket from 30 yards out on deep balls to Winnie Watkins and Jayce Brown.

A few moments later, he floated deep balls to Jackson Harris and Jayce Brown on double moves. All four throws were right on the money.

LINEMEN LINEUP

Once again, the offensive line split into right sides and left sides.

Jordan Seaton and Bo Bordelon did all their combination work together. Weston Davis, Aliou Bah and Braelin Moore did so on the other side. It doesn’t appear there has been any movement up front in camp. Those are the first guy who continue to work together outside of one practice that Davis missed.

DEFENSIVE DRILLS

Blake Baker talked forcing more turnovers and turning those into big plays the other way on Friday. The Tigers ran a circuit drill Tuesday with am emphasis on all of it.

The defenders worked on stripping the ball from a falling ball carrier, scooping loose balls on the run, swatting passes at the line of scrimmage and coming off the edge with an emphasis on strip sacks.

Baker, like every coordinator, wants turnovers.

Also worth noting, Ed Orgeron was still missing.

GERALDS GOES

As the media exited practice, Kevin People called for the first team defensive tackles. Duece Geralds was joined by Dominick McKinley. There have been variables at defensive tackle for LSU. Geralds hasn’t been one. At this point, he’s almost a lock to be a starter in his first college game.
