The New Orleans Saints are going to be down another running back for what appears to be an extended period.

Per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, running back and kick returner Ty Chandler suffered a knee injury, one that is feared to be severe and could keep him sidelined for a while.

Head Coach Kellen Moore confirmed the injury after Monday’s practice, as well.

“Chandler will have some time lost,” he said. And later clarified that the injury is “on the more serious side.”

New Orleans is already without backs Alvin Kamara and Devin Neal, having only gotten rushers Kendre Miller and Audric Estime back in recent days.

The team also traded to acquire running back Zamir White from the San Francisco 49ers to aid their depth at the position. Chandler’s injury may have been what inspired the Saints to pursue White.

New Orleans has dealt with a long list of injuries this offseason with the running back room is clearly the heaviest impacted. But with new starter Travis Etienne Jr. in the mix, along with the return of Estime and the promising play of undrafted rookie CJ Donaldson, the team has been able to stay afloat for the preseason games thus far.

Chandler had an 86-yard kickoff return against Jacksonville and looked to be in position to possibly carve out a role for himself in the regular season.

For now, it appears that will be out on hold for an extended period while he recovers from his knee injury.
