Saints’ roster, practice squad still in flux

After the second wave of roster adjustments for the New Orleans Saints, the team is currently carrying four wide receivers and three tight ends. They also have just five cornerbacks with three being younger, less experienced players

These positions are sure to continue to see some attention as the roster-building process continues. Especially in the groups that are light in numbers like wideout and tight end.

Head coach Kellen Moore was asked about the potential of adding players to select positions, namely wide receiver and cornerback. He was direct about his interest in continuing to add talent when possible.

“Hopefully, yeah,” he said. “We’ve got to navigate a few more things.”

Moore, during his first media availability after roster cuts, said the practice squad was being built, the process of filling out the roster is far from over at the initial 53-player cutdown.

Teams added talent via waivers, had to create corresponding moves in order to make room for those players and then will hit the practice field in the coming days where decisions about possible injury list decisions could be made.

“A few moving pieces (over the) last few days,” Moore said. “Obviously, it will take a few more days to kind of go through this process.”

Expect the Saints to remain active with both their 53-player roster and practice squad, which still has available spots for players to earn.

The wide receiver, tight end, defensive back and potentially offensive line units will be among the most intriguing to watch for upcoming additions and changes.

Another key to roster maneuvering may come down to health as well.

With a number of players still managing injuries, the possibility for additional Injured Reserve appointments still exists. Players like defensive tackle John Ridgeway III and rookie safety Lorenzo Styles Jr. appear to be trending in the right direction, but if more time than the first four weeks of the season are needed, heading to the injury list could be in the future for some players, per Moore.

“Potentially a couple of them just in the next few days,” he said when asked if he anticipates any more players heading to Injured Reserve. “We’ll see. Those are options for us.”
