As the New Orleans Saints prepare to take on the Detroit Lions in their road season debut, there are a few matchups that could end up dictating the way the game is decided.
Through the air, Detroit’s experience will test a young Saints defender, on the ground, two backs will determine each team’s ability to control the clock and to kick things off, the Saints’ top wideout can be a difference maker to start the season.
Saints WR Chris Olave vs. Lions Cornerbacks
Detroit cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin are set to match up with the Saints’ top wide receiver Chris Olave on the perimeter.
Down both starting safeties, a lot of pressure is going to be put on Reed and Ya-Sin to slow Olave, quarterback Tyler Shough and the Saints’ passing game down.
It will all start on the ground. But with safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph unavailable for the game and Ya-Sin and Reed ranking No. 41 and No. 52 in Pro Football Focus coverage grades among 85 qualifying cornerbacks last season, respectively, the Saints may have a chance to dial up a more explosive passing game than what they were able to deploy this time last year.
Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown vs. S Jonas Sanker
This is going to be a very intriguing matchup. Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown caught more than 72% of his passes from the slot last year. Meanwhile, Saints safety Jonas Sanker is moving into the team’s STAR/slot defender role for the first time this season.
St. Brown, who reeled in 1,401 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions in 2025, is going to be tough to contain. That is, unless the second-year safety shines in his debut at a new position.
The team will need to be ready for the field-stretching ability of fellow receiver Jameson Williams as well, as he is coming off of back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
RB Travis Etienne Jr. vs. RB Jahmyr Gibbs
They may not line up across from one another, but the running back with the better day will end up in the winning team in the Motor City.
The Saints went out to free agency and brought running back Travis Etienne Jr. back to Louisiana and hopes are high that he can help bring the run game back to New Orleans. Meanwhile, Lions’ rusher Jahmyr Gibbs is about to embark on a season for the first time as a bell cow back.
Both players have a lot they’d like to prove on Sunday in Etienne’s coveted new uniform and Gibbs’ trusted new workload. Each will have the chance to do so, both on the ground and as receivers out of the backfield.
Whichever handles their new environment best will likely end up on the winning side of the conversation thanks to their teammates’ ability to control the clock and dictate the terms of the game.
