The respect factor loomed large in Dunham’s place in this week’s Class 2A poll.
The Tigers, the reigning Division III select state champions, played up in classification for the second straight week, but unlike their Week 1 romp over Parkway, encountered the wrath of Catholic High, which suffered a 61-27 blowout loss at the hands of Carrollton, Ga.
When Dunham had its 12-game winning streak snapped in Friday’s encounter with Catholic, 58-8, the Tigers found a soft landing, only swapping places with Calvary Baptist (2-0) which is this week’s new No. 1 in the Class 2A poll after receiving nine of 11 first-place votes and 129 points.
No. 2 Dunham (1-1) garnered the other two first-place votes and 119 points.
Reigning Division II select state champion St. Charles Catholic worked overtime to keep its hold on the No. 1 ranking in Class 3A. The Comets, which opened with a 34-28 overtime win over Legacy, Texas in Week 1, fended off Class 5A Hahnville, 28-27 in overtime to improve to 2-0.
While that was the only change atop any of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s statewide rankings, there was movement at the bottom in each classification.
Reigning Division I non-select state champion Ouachita (2-0) emerged for the first time in the Class 5A poll at No. 10 with a 43-20 win over Wossman. The Lions opened the season with a 44-37 victory over Byrd.
After a 35-17 loss to Class 5A Mandeville in its opener, Salmen responded with a 51-14 win over Like Oak. The Tigers are No. 10 replacing E.D. White (0-2) which lost to Dutchtown, 35-7.
Marksville’s 30-14 win over Abbeville improved its record to 2-0 and prompted the Tigers’ first appearance in the Class 3A poll at No. 9 with 41 points.
Preseason No. 1 University (0-2) dropped to sixth after its 38-21 setback against Madison Prep, the No. 6 team in Class 4A.
Mansfield (2-0) is the No. 10 team in Class 2A with a 48-0 triumph over Washington-Marion. It was the Wolverines’ second straight shutout to begin the season after a 42-0 win over New Iberia.
South Plaquemines, the No. 8 preseason team in Class 1A, worked its way back into Top 10 at No. 10 with a 35-24 win over Bogalusa.
Westminster-Lafayette, ranked for the first time in school history a week ago, remained at No. 9 with a 50-8 win over Port Barre.
