Texas A&M has fallen off last year's statistical pace

Last season Texas A&M was among the most statistically impressive teams in the country.

Through three weeks, this year’s team hasn’t reproduced that.

The 2025 Aggies were top 25 in the country in total offense and total defense. They were top five in sacks and tackles for loss, and led the nation in third-down defense. They were top 25 in explosive plays on offense.

This group is searching for an identity following a physically dominating performance by Kentucky (31-21 win) at Kyle Field.

Quarterback Marcel Reed has schooled LSU in back-to-back seasons. He’s licking his wounds a little bit after an off game against the Wildcats.

The winner on Saturday will find a little momentum entering October. The loser will see its season reach the brink.

The Aggie offense has struggled to find a rhythm. The defense scored a pair of touchdowns against Arizona State. That helps.

But new offensive coordinator Holman Wiggins has leaned heavily on the pass. Some of that is because the Aggies fell behind in the Kentucky game. Some of it may be due to ineffectiveness.

There are serious weapons on the offense like Reuben Owens, Mario Craver and Isaiah Horton, but the Aggies haven’t been explosive at all. Only 10 teams have created less 20-plus yard plays.

Mike Elko has a calling card. It’s third down defense, and the Aggies are still excellent in that department. The rest of the numbers don’t resemble an Elko unit.

The Aggies are not creating negative plays often enough and have been beaten through the air by Arizona State and Kentucky. No Aggie has multiple sacks through three weeks.

Elko is a good bet to get this team in gear. LSU’s hope is that doesn’t come until October.
