The New Orleans Saints could get impact plays from two rookies on Monday night when they host the Atlanta Falcons for a key divisional matchup.

Both first-year contributors are returning from injury and will quickly see elevated roles when they re-take the field in front of a raucous and energized home crowd.

WR Barion Brown

Last week, New Orleans saw its worst starting field position from kickoff returns with an average of their own 27-yard line. It was their first game of the season without rookie return ace Barion Brown. The former LSU Tigers returner set up an important field goal at the end of the first half against the Baltimore Ravens, a score that buoyed the team’s momentum going into the break.

Brown’s ability to help the Saints win the hidden yardage and field position battles is an important element in his return. New Orleans could also look to finally get him more involved on the offensive side of the ball as well.

The Falcons haven’t allowed a lot of yards in after-catch opportunities so far this season. Brown’s ability with the ball in his hands could change that, especially in man coverage situations.

With the wideout’s speed on offense, working laterally or crossing the field against man coverage could create natural separation. If he’s hit in stride in the passing game by quarterback Tyler Shough, he may be able to take advantage of the space ahead of him.

DL Christen Miller

Returning from a toe injury, defensive lineman Christen Miller could have an impact in a number of areas, most notably his ability to disrupt the run game.

The Falcons’ rushing attack, led by running back Bijan Robinson, is the face of the team’s offense. If Miller can help the Saints’ defensive line win at the line of scrimmage, facing an offensive line that’s created less than a half-yard before contact per rush this season, his return becomes invaluable.

Miller also has untapped potential as a pass rusher with his athletic play style despite his size. Atlanta has not surrendered much pressure this season and will likely look to send a lot of attention over to edge rusher Chase Young.

Someone will have to win their consistent one-on-one opportunities. Miller could be the player on the interior best suited to do so.
