Lutcher arrived at its biggest of the game this season, hosting arch-rival St. James in a showdown that would go a long way toward determining the District 9-3A championship.
The Bulldogs not only maintained their winnings way in 35-20 victory, but it was their third straight win and fifth in the last seven weeks, propelling them into this week’s Class 3A rankings for the first time this season.
Lutcher (5-2) debuted at No. 9 in Class 3A which was led once again by No. 1 St. Charles Catholic (6-1) whom the Bulldogs visit on Oct. 30.
The Comets received all 11 first-place votes for 132 points, ahead of No. 2 University High (5-2) with 121 points and No. 3 Jena (5-2) with 101.
St. James (5-2) lost its second straight game and fell four spots to No, 6.
The New Orleans Catholic League had another enjoyable schedule with four of the state’s top teams deciding the pecking order for the league’s 9-5A championship.
No. 1 Karr (7-0) edged No. 4 Archbishop Rummel (6-1), 27-20, helping the Cougars solidify their spot atop the Class 5A rankings, while the Raiders only fell one spot to No. 5.
Another top 10 matchup featured No. 7 St. Thomas More and No. 8 Barbe with the Cougars (6-1) rallying in the second half for a 35-14 victory. The Buccaneers (6-1) lost for the first time and dropped out of the poll.
Catholic-Baton Rouge (4-3) extended its winning streak to three games with a 70-38 road win over Zachary and and returned to the poll at No. 10.
Neville claimed a key District 2-4A win over Franklin Parish, 49-24. The Tigers (5-1) won for the fifth straight time, earned two first-place votes in the Class 4A poll, but remained at No. 2 behind No. Westgate (6-0) which picked up eight first-place votes.
No. 6 Lake Charles College Prep (6-1) found itself locked in a dual with Class 3A’s fourth-ranked team Sterlington with the Trailblazers emerging with a 39-38 triumph. Lake Charles College Prep moved two positions, while the Panthers (4-3) fell back one spot to No. 5 in Class 3A.
For the first time since the preseason poll Loreauville (5-2) is back in the Class 2A rankings at No. 10 after its 12-10 District 8-2A win over arch-rival Catholic-New Iberia which dropped from the rankings for the first time.
That enabled No. 8 Lake Arthur (7-0) and No. 9 Mansfield (6-1) to each move up one spot this week.
Everyone in Class 1A’s top 10 were all victorious with No. 2 Ascension Catholic (7-0) surviving for a 26-21 win over St. Martin’s in District 10-1A play.
