VERSAILLES, France – The first-ever NFL game in France offers not only an opportunity for the league to continue to expand its international footprint, but it also gives the New Orleans Saints a more immediate chance to get their season going in the right direction.
After comments by team owner Gayle Benson shook up the outlook on the team with her comments at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club calling the team’s performance, which resulted in a 1-4 record up to the point of her remarks, “not acceptable,” the team was able to pick up a win against the New York Giants.
However, that victory didn’t come without suspense when the Saints nearly gave away a 24-point lead.
The performance, which still ended in victory, was one that didn’t necessarily calm the storm circulating around that team.
That’s the opportunity that now lies before head coach Kellen Moore and the team this week. One that, with a strong performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers on a world stage, could finally quiet the noise, doubt and concern.
New Orleans (2-4) stole an impressive win in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens. It was a win that skyrocketed the expectations and confidence around the club.
But unfortunately, that statement victory was followed by a three-game home losing streak that included a comeback victory by the Las Vegas Raiders. Arguably the low moment was a dominant display by the Atlanta Falcons on the 20th anniversary of the team’s return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, a hapless display against the Minnesota Vikings on an evening in which former quarterback and Hall of Famer Drew Brees was honored at halftime.
A win against New York helped to serve as a quick palette cleanser, but the opportunity to truly change the course of the season presents itself when the Saints and Steelers kickoff from Stade de France in Paris on Sunday.
