VERSAILLES, France – It will be at least another week before the New Orleans Saints will see their first-round rookie wide receiver debut at practices, per the team’s general manager Mickey Loomis.
Following Wednesday’s practice, Loomis visited with media members in attendance at the team’s home base in Versailles. When asked about progress of rookie wideout Jordyn Tyson’s recovery from injury, he delivered a not-so-promising update.
“He’s improving,” said Loomis. “He’s not going to practice this week. But he is improving and we feel like we’re getting closer. I don’t have a specific timetable for that yet, but we’re encouraged.”
The promise of “getting closer” after nearly 10 weeks removed from a hamstring injury is hardly optimistic for anyone keeping count, but Loomis did also admit the Saints are taking a very cautious approach to the timeline for his return.
Without any practice, coupled with a bye after the team’s international trip, there’s a high probability that his practice debut won’t come any earlier than Week 9 when the team returns home.
It’s likely that the team is doing so as a way to maximize his potential of staying on the field once he returns.
“The injury that he has is not the same injury that he had before,” Loomis said. “Those can happen to any player. It’s unfortunate that it happened at the very beginning of his career, but hopefully this is the one and only injury that he has, and we’re really encouraged about what we saw in training camp when he was practicing before he got injured. We’re looking forward to having him back.”
Tyson has suffered a number of hamstring injuries since his collegiate days. In October of 2025 he suffered one at Arizona State which caused him to miss three games and some of his offseason, including the NFL scouting combine. He had a recurrence during that process that the Saints monitored closely during OTAs and then had this most recent injury during a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The longer it takes for the team to get their rookie receiver on the field, the more questions will continue to rise. The Saints, despite drafting Tyson No. 8 overall, are trying to proceed cautiously in the best interest of their top pick’s recovery in the hopes of extending his availability once he’s back.
All that will ultimately matter will be how Tyson performs once he’s cleared to play. That, and how long he remains on the field after returning.
Tyson lining up opposite top wideout Chris Olave was a pairing that drew both high praise and expectations, but have remained clouded by the slow-moving timeline that’s keep Tyson sidelined.
