After a disappointing 2-5 start and some historically poor performances, the New Orleans Saints had a surprisingly quiet bye week.
New Orleans isn’t often a franchise that rushes toward change. For better or worse, the team often looks to ride things out.
But a quiet bye week after the team’s frustrating start to a season that’s been perceived as a lack of urgency with an unsuccessful run game and porous defense isn’t likely to inspire much confidence moving forward.
As of now, no staff changes, or meaningful roster moves, have been announced and head coach Kellen Moore implied there won’t be much change to how the team develops its run game, at least not yet.
The Saints will be back at the podium on Monday following the weekend away from the field. At which time, Moore will again be asked about changes. An empty response is only going to inflame those that have become quite disgruntled with the team’s performance.
Whether it’s from game plan adjustments, personnel tweaks or even a focus on changing tendencies (like running on 81.8% of second and three or less plays) there will
need to be some display of change from the team.
New Orleans currently averages just 86 rushing yards per game and 3.5 per carry, both ranking in the bottom-five across the NFL.
The Saints won’t be able to remain silent about potential solutions to their disappointing start.
Monday will be an important one for Moore and the Saints. It could mark the possible return of players that could contribute on offense in a major way with both running back Travis Etienne Jr. and Jordyn Tyson eligible to return from injured reserve.
But overall, it will be the changes, a reorganization and fresh approaches that most will be looking for.
