With former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley now in place as the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator, the focus shifts to assembling his defensive coaching staff.
Key positions—such as defensive backs, linebackers, and defensive line coaches—still need to be filled, along with any specialty roles Staley may introduce. One name that stands out as a strong candidate for a spot on his staff is Will Harris.
No, not the former Saints safety—though, the Saints should absolutely consider bringing him back to the roster—but instead the former Florida Gators secondary coach.
Harris spent two seasons with the Gators before making an unexpected departure this offseason. Initially, it appeared he was set to join Florida rival Miami, but he has yet to land a position.
That could indicate that he may be waiting on different news.
Staley and Harris worked together with the Chargers in 2023. Harris was the assistant defensive backs coach.
The USC graduate now has years of experience working with key elements of Staley’s scheme, after spending his recent years in Gainesville. Both systems, for instance, deploy a STAR position in their secondary and lean heavily on versatility.
If Harris is not completely settled in Miami just yet, that may open the door for him to reunite with a familiar face in the Big Easy.
