The quarterback competition set to take place for the New Orleans Saints’ starting signal caller role is the biggest sports story in the city. And there’s no one better to ask to evaluate the situation than the franchise’s greatest player, former quarterback Drew Brees.
The future NFL Hall of Famer and Saints Super Bowl champion spoke with New Orleans media at the opening of the new Metairie, La. location of Surge Entertainment.

During that time, he was asked to share his thoughts on the team’s rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who is the presumed front-runner to land the starting role as soon as week one.
“I think what’s impress to me is he’s faced a lot of adversity,”. Brees said. “And he’s overcome it every step of the way … I think he’s big, strong, tough. Standing there, deliver the ball, taking shots.”
Brees highlighted his belief in Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm, a known quarterback developer. Brohm was Shough’s head coach at Louisville. Now, he works under another great quarterback guru in Saints head coach Kellen Moore, with whom Brees also expressed confidence.
Of course, Shough isn’t the only name in the New Orleans quarterback room under consideration for the job. Along with the rookie, second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler and third-year passer Jake Haener will help to keep the competition interesting. That’s something that Brees was sensitive to and shared his excitement to see unfold.
“We’ll see how this thing shakes out,” he said. “I’m not giving anyone the job right now. I know we went out and drafted Tyler Shough in the second round, but I’m sure Haener and Rattler have something to say about that. Competitions bring out the best in everybody. I’m sure (Kellen Moore’s) excited to mold these guys.”
