Gayle Benson statement after Colts owner Jim Irsay’s death

Saints owner Gayle Benson released a statement Wednesday after Colts owner Jim Irsay died. He was 65.
“It is with sadness to hear of the sudden passing of Jim Irsay. He was a one-of-a-kind gentleman that was so proud to be the steward for his beloved Indianapolis Colts football team and the community it represents. Our organizations will forever be linked through Super Bowl XLIV. He, his family, and the Colts organization represented the epitome of class and graciousness in the days and years that have followed. My thoughts and prayers are extended to the Irsay family during this most difficult time.”

Irsay’s health has been in question after he did not attend the NFL owner’s meetings in Florida in March or the meetings this week in Minnesota. He was treated for a suspected overdose in 2023 and was arrested for DWI in 2014.
Irsay became the owner of the Colts in 1997 after his father Bob Irsay died. The younger Irsay has stated many times that his daughters will take ownership of the franchise. All three daughters have ownership titles and have been active in helping operate the franchise.
The Colts played in two Super Bowls under Irsay’s leadership. The team won Super Bowl XLI against the Bears and lost Super Bowl XLIV to the Saints.
