Tyler Shough’s big plays promise excitement in Saints QB battle

By Ross Jackson
After his competitor got off to a hot start in OTAs, New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough relied on big plays downfield to keep himself firmly placed in the team’s quarterback conversation
Not that Shough was in any risk of losing the gig against second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler this early in the process, but it is important to stay centered in the conversation for both signal callers.
While Rattler remained efficient and clean with a 10/12 day in 7-on-7s Thursday, it was the deep ball that kept eyes on Shough.
His first throw in the 7-on-7 drills was a bomb to wide receiver Bub Means down the left sideline. The pass was perfectly placed, allowing Means to stay in stride for the catch-and-run touchdown.

A couple of series later, Shough found wideout Donovan Peoples-Jones for a similar strike downfield. He later connected with tight end Jake Stoll in the intermediate area with a great touch pass in between defenders.
The rookie quarterback showed off the arm talent that many surmised was the best available in the 2025 NFL Draft class. His ability to dial up the big plays, but also throttle down and show finesse is a great asset to have a young passer.
Both Rattler and Shough have impressed throughout OTAs. And despite throwing a pick to close out the competitive drills, the rookie in particular shined in a big way.
The two passers have been battling more behind the scenes than what the media has been able to see. But from week to week it is noticeable how much more comfortable both have gotten.
The competition will continue for the next few months and it promises to be an entertaining one. Rattler experience sets him apart, but Shough’s big plays potential is sure to entice. Right now, both passers are showing uplifting promise.
