As the New Orleans Saints head into their break ahead of training camp, there are many elements of the team’s new direction that have become more clear.
From the passing attack to the new-look 3-4 defense, from standup pass rushers to the expanding Star role, there is a lot new about the Saints in 2025.
While there have been glimpses at each of those areas of the game, there is one uniquely important unknown that remains: the trenches.
Offensive Line
New Orleans has re-invested in the protection unit up front on offense by drafting new left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., the team was able to move Taliese Fuaga back to his collegiate right tackle spot, and now has shifted Trevor Penning into the interior at left guard.
They also bolstered depth with the additions of Dillon Radunz and Will Clapp while re-signing Landon Young.
While the moves are all bringing a positive outlook and hope for improvement of the unit, their chemistry and ability are still massive question marks.
Defensive Line
The team finished 2024 No. 31 against the run and with the fourth-most missed tackles in the league. The defensive line will be leaned upon to help improve both of those standings.
However, the position group from last season has mostly returned. New additions like defensive linemen Davon Godchaux, Jonas Williams, and Fadil Diggs will carry the task of bringing fresh talent and production to the unit. Meanwhile, returning players like edge rushers Chase Young and Carl Granderson will look to take steps forward for the team in their new roles.
Why Are These Unknown Areas?
The Saints didn’t do any full-team, 11-on-11 drills throughout OTAs and minicamp. Head coach Kellen Moore explained that he wanted to limit physicality and contact in order to help keep players healthy heading into the break and coming back for training camp.
A good choice but one that did limit a chance to get a glimpse of each new unit. Though, non-contact drills would have only provided so much of a preview.
That will leave both sides of the trenches as major unknowns headed into live action.
