Coastal Carolina isn’t much of an underdog to LSU in this year’s College World Series, but the country is rooting for the Chanticleers like it’s David vs. Goliath.
A study conducted by SportsBetting.ag shows that 47 of the 50 states are pulling for the Chanticleers to pull off the upset, denying the Tigers their eighth CWS title in school history.
To determine which squad “won” each state, the team tracked geotagged X data for fan hashtags and keyword phrases for LSU and Coastal in each state (such as #ChantsUp and #GeauxTigers, as well as phrases such as, “I’m rooting for Coastal Carolina” and “I’m rooting for LSU”). They added all those up and the team with the majority subsequently won that state.
More than 100,000 tweets were tracked since the matchup was set last night. Here’s a map that displays the findings:
As you can see from the map, nearly the entire country is rooting for Coastal Carolina. Arizona is likely rooting for LSU because Jay Johnson was the Wildcats head the last time they went to the CWS, and, coincidentally, lost to Coastal Carolina.
State Breakdown:
LSU – Louisiana, Arizona, Nebraska
Coastal Carolina – Every Other State
The odds from SportsBetting.ag show the LSU Tigers as -190 favorites to take another title back to Baton Rouge, while the Chanticleers come back as +155 underdogs.
