College football still hasn’t dipped its big toe in the waters of private equity just yet. However, it does seem that this route is more and more likely given the nature of where the sport is and even more so the trajectory of the sport.
Earlier this week The Athletic put out an estimate of the top ten most valuable college football programs in the country and what they think they’d be worth on the open market. To the surprise of no one the top ten list was almost entirely composed of SEC and B1G teams with the addition of Notre Dame.
The one surprising exclusion was Texas A&M. While this is strictly an estimation exercise, it was unexpected not to see the Aggies crack the top 10 in overall value. Keep in mind earlier this year, Texas A&M locked in a multimedia rights deal with the company Playfly for $515 million. That was the biggest multimedia rights deal in college sports history as of February.
Here’s a look at the top ten.
- Texas – $2 .38 Billion
- Georgia – $1.92 Billion
- Ohio State – $1.9 Billion
- Notre Dame – $1.85 Billion
- Michigan – $1.83 Billion
- Alabama – $1.74 Billion
- Oklahoma – $1.49 Billion
- Southern Cal – $1.4 Billion
- Tennessee – $1.37 Billion
- LSU – $1.23 Billion
