IRVINE, Calif. — The New Orleans Saints announced via press release that two moves have been made.
The Saints have waived incumbent punter Matthew Hayball and have re-signed quarterback Hunter Dekkers.
New Orleans will now have its fourth starting punter in as many years. It is likely that either newcomer James Burnip or Kai Kroeger, both of whom the Saints signed this offseason to compete for the job, will end up winning the role.
As a corresponding move, bringing Dekkers back will give the Saints four quarterbacks to rotate throughout the remainder of camp.
Dekkers was originally signed to the team this offseason following a rookie minicamp tryout. He was then waived to make room to bring in Kroeger. Now that Hayball is off the roster, Dekkers and the Saints will reunite.
The battle for starting punter will continue Thursday as the team resumes practices in Irvine, Calif.
