Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is trending toward being ready for Week 1 despite missing practice time during fall camp with a calf injury, head coach Billy Napier said Wednesday.
Lagway, who went 6-1 as a starter last season, sat out the Gators’ first scrimmage last weekend and his status for Saturday’s second scrimmage remains uncertain. But Napier said the sophomore signal-caller is “on schedule” in his recovery.
“I think he’s doing great,” Florida head coach Billy Napier said. “I think he’s on schedule; he’s executing our plan…He had a great day. Think he had his best day today. He took more reps today than he’s been taking. Obviously, he didn’t participate in the scrimmage [last Saturday], but he’s hitting all his numbers from a throw perspective. The ball is coming out of his hand with more velocity than any time in his career.”
Lagway finished his freshman season completing 59 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Gators will need him healthy as they prepare for one of the toughest schedules in the nation, which opens with a challenging Week 1 matchup.
