July 31, 2025: during fall practice at Charles McClendon Practice Facility in Baton Rouge, LA. Michael Bacigalupi
By Hunt Palmer
It’s fair to call Friday’s LSU practice a light workout.
The Tigers stayed inside for the entirety of practice and only the wide receivers wore shoulder pads (for receiving purposes).
Attendance
Garrett Nussmeier essentially took the day off from throwing. He did some light tossing early in practice but didn’t throw at all after the halfway point. Michael Van Buren took the first team reps, and Nussmeier worked behind him taking “mental reps”. Every once in a while a quarterback’s arm needs a day.
Chris Hilton and Jardin Gilbert were not at practice. They received degrees today, so congratulations are in order.
Whit Weeks was at practice in a jersey but did not wear a helmet or participate. He was in good spirits following the linebackers around drill to drill.
Soloman Thomas, the big freshman offensive lineman, is in a walking boot for that fractured toe. We saw him on the exercise bike when he wasn’t wheeling around on his scooter.
Who’s In?
With Weeks out of practice, Tylen Singleton worked with the first team. I have seen enough of that to confirm that the staff feels like the former four-star from Many is ready to help.
On the offensive line, the shuffling at left guard continued. DJ Chester and Paul Mubenga split those reps about 50-50 today between multiple periods. That position battle is not settled at this point.
Like Mike
It was a busy day today for Van Buren with Nussmeier taking a breather. I thought he had a really nice day in 7-on-7 work. That started at 3/4 speed against the scout team and progressed to work against the first team secondary.
Van Buren was a perfect 5-for-5 against the scout team including a deep ball to Barion Brown and a well thrown out route to Trey’Dez Green.
He began the period against the starters with a zip to Zavion Thomas over the middle. Then the threw a nice out route to Trey’Dez Green for a touchdown.
WR vs. CB
In one-one-ones, there were some standout plays.
Jelani Watkins made an awesome catch on a go route. The ball appeared to be well overthrown, but he turned on the jets and nabbed it running by Aidan Anding.
Tamarcus Cooley had an interception coving Kyle Parker.
Barion Brown made a nice touchdown catch through good coverage by Mansoor Delane.
PJ Woodland broke up a deep ball intended for Nic Anderson.
Aaron Anderson ran right by Tamarcus Cooley like he was standing still.
Ashton Stamps made a good play on a deep ball for Nic Anderson. He also broke up a pass intended for Zavion Thomas.
AJ Haulcy knocked away a fade for Bauer Sharp.
OVERALL
The overview is short today because it was basically a walk through.
PJ Woodland worked with the first team secondary in one-on-ones. He was joined by Delane at the other corner and Cooley and Haulcy at safety. Stamps worked with the second team. I very much believe Stamps to be a starter, but Corey Raymond is getting a good look at Woodland.
Traditionally, Saturday is the delineation between camp and practice for Clemson. Perhaps there has already been a significant shift toward Clemson beyond what the media has seen, but game day is two weeks away.
We have not received word about further media availability at this time.
