Jay Johnson tries to build rosters around left-handed pitching and hitting.
He nabbed a big-time left-handed pitching commitment on Thursday.
Logan Schmidt, the top prep left-hander in the 2026 class, pledged to the Tigers via social media. Johnson’s program has exceled in reeling in and developing hurlers from California.

Riley Cooper, Gage Jump, Thatcher Hurd, Jaden Noot and Anthony Eyanson have blossomed into huge roles at LSU.
Schmidt is very young for his age having just turned 17 this summer. He’ll play his senior year of high school ball before his 18th birthday. His fastball has been clocked in the high 90s already.
Talented southpaws are always MLB Draft risks, and Schmidt certainly qualifies. If LSU can get him to campus, he could be a serious impact arm for three seasons in Baton Rouge.
