Coaches from all 16 schools in the SEC addressed upcoming games, injury updates, and more. Here are some news and notes from the teleconference leading into Week 4.
Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin will start Trinidad Chambliss at quarterback this Saturday against LSU as Austin Simmons continues to nurse an ankle injury.
Kiffin also spoke on the SEC schedule reveal.
“The Oklahoma (game) is really disappointing. We don’t have anything in common with them or the fans. That doesn’t make any sense at all. That’s unfortunate. It is what it is.”
He had some interesting points about LSU’s revamped roster from the transfer portal.
“They spent a lot of money in the portal, and it paid off.”
Finally he answered a question about his daughter’s new public relationship with star LSU LB Whit Weeks.
“Whit’s an awesome kid and comes from a great family. Glad that those two are happy together.”
Auburn
Hugh Freeze announced that transfer WR Horatio Fields from Wake Forest broke his foot and will have surgery tomorrow. Former five star wide receiver Perry Thompson will be the “next man up,” according to Freeze.
South Carolina
Dave Ubben of The Athletic asked Shane Beamer about his thoughts on the availability report and how it’s being used by coaches. This comes after LaNorris Sellers was listed on it last week but was able to play Saturday against Missouri.
“Trying to avoid gamesmanship. If a guy is questionable to play, I’m gonna say he’s questionable. If a guy is probable, I’m gonna say he’s probable. I’ve got enough to worry about trying to get a team ready to play a game without being sneaky and things like that.”
Beamer also commented on the questions that surfaced about LaNorris Sellers’ leadership on social media on Tuesday.
“They’re not the most vocal guys. He doesn’t get too high or too low. They’re both extremely hard workers. Their actions speak louder than their words. He doesn’t have to use it (his voice) all the time. Each guy has their own style of leadership. Everybody on this team respects the heck out of LaNorris Sellers. He’s a fantastic leader, too, just like Jalen Hurts was.”
Alabama
Sixth year senior linebacker Jah-Marien Latham was hospitalized with a neck injury on Tuesday.
“He is currently undergoing a thorough medical assessment to determine the next steps in his recovery,” DeBoer said. “Our top priority is Jah’s health and well-being. We are in close contact with his family and the medical team and will continue to support him in every way possible. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.”
