It wasn’t the craziest of Saturdays, but with LSU on a bye and some of the marquee games ending in blowouts here’s what you may have missed.
Texas A&M gets to 5-0
Texas A&M continued its effort to move past the “Texas 8-4” label with a big Saturday night win over Mississippi State under the lights of a Kyle Field blackout.
After a sluggish start, and a much better than advertised Bulldogs team, the Aggies won 31-9.
The Aggies were led by two of their biggest offseason investments in wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. Concepcion caught two touchdowns and Craver finished with 115 yards rushing and receiving and added a touchdown on the ground.
Mississippi State put up a valiant fight for the entire first half, but struggled to protect Blake Shapen consistently. Texas A&M is 5-0 for the first time since 2016.
Oklahoma dominates Kent State with backup QB Michael Hawkins
Quarterback John Mateer missed Saturday’s game with a broken hand and is expected to miss the Texas matchup as well, but Oklahoma used the Kent State game to tune up for the Red River Rivalry. They did it with one of the biggest ingredients they’ve lacked since they joined the league: quality depth.
Backup quarterback Michael Hawkins took the reins and led the Sooners to a 44-0 win. Kent State is one of the worst teams in America, but the Sooners did what they’ve done to everyone all year. They played suffocating defense, allowing just 135 yards of offense and zero points. And, they allowed their backup quarterback to get valuable reps in case he is needed Saturday.
Hawkins finished with 195 yards of offense.
The best thing you’ll see all day, and it wasn’t even in the SEC
The best thing you’ll see all day on Saturday wasn’t anywhere close to the footprint of the Southeastern Conference. It was in Pasadena, California where 0-4 UCLA upset perennial over ranked, and overhyped, Penn State 42-37.
What made it even more special was seeing former UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel watch his son, Jerry, a former Bruins quarterback, earn the win as offensive play caller after just two days of preparation for Penn State.
What a moment. Sports, man.
