LSU had a bye week to search for offensive answers. I have one.
This isn’t some stroke of genius. It’s not something LSU’s coaching staff hasn’t considered. It’s quite the opposite. That doesn’t disqualify it from being an answer to some of LSU’s offensive woes.
Green was essential to LSU’s game plan at Clemson. He only made four catches for 17 yards, which doesn’t light up the stat sheet, but he caught one of LSU’s touchdowns on a play specifically designed for him, and he drew a pass interference flag in the end zone to set up the other score.
In a 17-10 game, he was directly responsible for 14 points.
Green missed a couple of games with a knee sprain. He returned to action at Ole Miss but didn’t make a catch. He was only targeted once. That has to change moving forward.
It will.
LSU doesn’t have to re-write the playbook to get Green involved. Joe Sloan has been on staff for three years, and in those three years Mason Taylor managed to set the LSU record for catches and receiving yards by a tight end. Taylor was integral to the offense weekly for three seasons. Green plays the same spot.
Unlike Taylor, Green is 6-foot-7 and jumps like a small forward. I haven’t researched every defensive player in college football, but I’m confident in my assessment that not a single one boasts those two attributes.

LSU finished sixth in the country on third down last year. They’re 55th this year. Feed the tight end.
LSU scored 29 touchdowns through the air last year. They’re on pace for 20 this year. Feed the tight end.
LSU is struggling to stretch the field this year. Feed the tight end.
It’s an elixir for so many woes right now, and it’s a matchup advantage every week.
Keep in mind, this is not suggested as an oversight by LSU’s staff. Green has missed significant time with injury. His absence from the Ole Miss stat sheet can be attributed to that. No longer.
Green is healthy and gives LSU a huge advantage when he’s on the field. He’s done that since he showed up on campus.
Taylor opted out of the bowl game last year to prepare for his eventual second round selection by the Jets. Green stepped in and caught a pair of touchdowns against Dave Aranda’s Baylor Bears.
Brian Kelly allowed the media incredible August access. Almost daily we watched Green torch what we now know is a salty defense. He’s a massive problem for opposing coordinators.
LSU has issues in the running game and big picture problems on offense. None of that goes away totally with one adjustment. But it will help.
Feed the tight end.
