METAIRIE, La. – There is not a decision yet on which quarterback will start for the New Orleans Saints as they travel to the West Coast to take on the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore told reporters during his Monday day-after media availability that a decision is coming soon. The team focused Monday on turning the page from their 23-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but will now look ahead to their most pressing matter.
“We’ll now begin, really starting here soon, our plan of action for [Los Angeles],” he said. “We’ll make a decision shortly and just go down that path so we can maximize as many reps and opportunities as we can moving forward.”
After benching quarterback Spencer Rattler in the third quarter of Sunday’s game for rookie Tyler Shough, the growing expectation is that the Saints will turn the rest of the season over to Shough. But the team will wait a little longer before either confirming or denying those suspicions.
This isn’t exactly a surprise as Moore did say following Sunday’s game that the team will take the following 24 hours to consider their options and make a decision. New Orleans is intent upon selecting its next starter in time for that player to see the appropriate allocation of starting reps in the upcoming practices.
That may mean an announcement won’t come until Wednesday afternoon, media availability following the first day of on-field work as the team prepares for its upcoming game.
The Rattler and Shough debate appears set to rage on for at least another day with a decision that, for many, can’t come soon enough.
