LSU is targeting South Carolina Defensive Run Game Coordinator Sterling Lucas to fill its final vacancy on the defensive staff. Lucas also works with the defensive ends and outside linebackers for the Gamecocks.
Football Scoop was the first to report the news.
LSU is looking to replace Kyle Williams who spent just one year on staff. Williams is not expected to return to college coaching. The Tigers are looking to hire their eighth defensive line coach since spring of 2023 when Jamar Cain left for the NFL.
Lucas has worked with the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL and took the job at South Carolina in 2022. The 2024 Gamecocks featured perhaps the most feared duo of edge rusher in the country — Dylan Stewart and Kyle Kennard.
A senior, Kennard was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year after ammassing 11.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss. Stewart, just a freshman, had 6.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.
Stewart and counterpart Bryan Thomas Jr. both received All-SEC honors at defensive end in 2025.
Lucas would join a staff largely held over from 2025 with defensive coordinator Blake Baker, edge rushers coach Kevin Peoples, cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond and safties coach Jake Olson.
