New LSU running backs coach Kevin Smith spent his first day on the job Sunday and wasted little time recruiting his top target.
Freshman running back Harlem Berry and his father met with Smith and LSU general Manager Billy Glasscock for about an hour Sunday night, according to a source. The sides are working to solidify Berry’s return to LSU for his sophomore season in 2026.
Berry was the No. 1 running back in the class of 2025 according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound freshman from New Orleans has played in all 12 games with five starts for the Tigers. He is second on the team with 446 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Berry’s return could be complicated if LSU were to add Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy via the transfer portal. Lacy has not declared his intention to enter the portal, however, a video surfaced of a phone conversation where Kiffin suggested Smith and Lacy would be joining him at LSU.
LouisianaSports.net previously reported Ole Miss has offered Lacy $1.8 million to return to the Rebels in 2026.
The source said it would likely take more conversation “to solidify” Berry’s return should Lacy elect to transfer to LSU.
The Tigers’ leading rusher, Caden Durham, is also eligible to return for his junior season in 2026. Ju’Juan Johnson has declared his intention to enter the transfer portal, but says he is open to a return to LSU should Kiffin want him.
Smith is one of six LSU assistants coaching Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff. The staff returns to Baton Rouge to work when the Rebels have an off day. Ole Miss will play Georgia on Jan. 1 in the CFP Quarterfinals at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
