Along with interviewing New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien for their open offensive coordinator position, the Pittsburgh Steelers have their sights set on another Saints coaching staff member.
Per Trey Carney, formerly of SteelerNation.com, the Steelers have requested to interview Saints assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans. Evans spent time as a player working with new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy when the two were with the Green Bacy Packers in 2017.
The report was confirmed by WPXI’s Alan Saunders.
Evans has been on the Saints’ coaching staff since 2022 and spent 11 seasons as a player with the team from 2006 through 2016 before joining McCarthy and the Packers. Evans is currently a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the third consecutive year.
The presumption is that Evans would be interviewing for the Steelers’ assistant offensive line position, making the move a lateral one which requires a request be granted in order for the interview to be held.
Pittsburgh is already reportedly ready to hire its new offensive line coach, James Campen, per multiple reports. Campen was Evans’s offensive line coach in 2017 with the Packers.
After weeks of silence around potential poaching opportunities for Saints’ staffers, two have shaken loose as the Senior Bowl winds down in Mobile, Ala. Whether or not Evans and Tolzien depart remains to be seen, with other names being considered for their potential roles. However, if they both stick with New Orleans, one must expect both to get more opportunities in future years.
