It’s not even the weekend before free agency yet, but the New Orleans Saints are already beyond compliant with the salary cap. The Saints have money to spend.
Nearly $19 million to spend, to be exact. Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, New Orleans restructured the deals of defensive end Chase Young, tight end Juwan Johnson, safety Justin Reid and reworked the deal of running back Alvin Kamara.
The Saints and Alvin Kamara converted $10.155 million of his salary, but it wasn’t the same standard conversion that Justin Reid, Juwan Johnson and Chase Young did.

The details of Kamara’s agreement conversion appear to differ from the earlier trio of moves, Underhill reported.
The team has already worked its way into or near the middle of the league in available salary cap space.
Per Spotrac’s Mike Ginnitti, New Orleans has cleared $31.5 million. The cap tracking site lists the Saints with $19.6 million available. Meanwhile, Over The Cap has the team with just over $20 million freed up.
In either case, New Orleans has money to spend and can still find more.
The team has a number of additional restructure options available. A conversion of defensive end Carl Granderson’s deal to a signing bonus could save the Saints more than $8 million if done in full, for instance.
Additionally, players like center Erik McCoy and guard Cesar Ruiz could each save the team north of $6 million apiece if restructured.
Reaching deals with players on voiding contracts can help as well. While the current signs suggest that longtime defensive end Cameron Jordan will not receive a deal before his contract voids, nothing is set in stone and agreements can still be reached with players like linebacker Demario Davis, tight end Foster Moreau (who was still working out with Saints teammates recently) and quarterback Taysom Hill.
