Multiple SEC schools have unveiled logo patch deals for the upcoming year. Arkansas will proudly wear Tyson Foods logos across their uniforms, and LSU will don logo patches for Woodside Energy. Those are fine, and I’m not here to shame anyone shelling out $10 million or more for a three inch patch.
Here are the deals that make too much sense not to use.
Alabama – Golden Flake
I’m not sure how much money Golden Flake is able to provide as a company since they’re worth around $200 million. Those Sweet Heat Barbecue chips are incredible and worth way more than $2.19 on the bottom shelf of the chip aisle. Know your worth Golden Flake. That’s besides the point though. Golden Flake was the official sponsor of the Bear Bryant and Gene Stallings Coaches Show back in the day. Get them back in the fold.

Auburn – Apple
I know that Yellawood is right there, and that Jimmy Rayne is the state’s lone billionaire. He’s also the most notable booster and has been in the rumored “Good ‘Ol Boys” that has largely the decision making for Auburn athletics for years. Whether that’s true or not isn’t a concern. The choice for Auburn is Apple. Apple’s CEO since 2011 is Tim Cook who is an Auburn alum, and $20 million for a patch is a drop in the bucket for them. Plus, it makes sense considering Auburn comes out with a new football coach almost as often as a new iPhone comes out.

Florida – Gatorade
How has this not happened already? Gatorade was invented at the University of Florida in 1965. The company exploded thanks to Michael Jordan ads and hangovers in college, and is now worth more than $5 billion. There’s not a single brand partnership that makes more sense in the SEC than this one. Get it done.

Georgia – Uber
Stop making low hanging fruit jokes and hear me out. Outside of Austin, no SEC city has a higher concentration of Uber drivers than Athens, Ga. The town also boasts one of the best bar scenes in America, and one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. It’s also just 79 miles from Atlanta. About 15 years ago, Delta tried getting into a market of quick flights during the work week from Athens to Atlanta for commuters, but it fizzled out because of the price. Uber could tap right back into that market with game day deals to and from the city and surrounding area.

Kentucky – Buffalo Trace
There are a ton of great bourbon distilleries to choose from in Kentucky, but Buffalo Trace makes the most sense. Buffalo Trace is delicious and affordable, but not long ago it was just one of those things. In 2022 there was a shortage of supply from the distillery that caused the price to jump from $25-$30 to nearly $50 per bottle. The popularity has maintained, but the purchase amount has finally returned to a more reasonable price point. You could make the argument that Buffalo Trace peaked in 2022. The same could be said for Kentucky who at one point in September was ranked No. 7 in the country. They finished the season 7-6, and did not age nearly as well as the bourbon.
