Biggest Storyline
Will the LSU at Vanderbilt winner make the postseason?
No one can win the SEC or punch a ticket to Omaha in Nashville this weekend. Someone can really dig themselves a hole they may not get out of though if they lose. Two of the premiere programs in the SEC square off in what was supposed to be one of the biggest series of the entire season. Instead, neither team is ranked in the top ten, and LSU and Vanderbilt have a combined 12 losses before conference play has even started.
Losing this series wouldn’t be the end of the world. The loser will definitely have a ton of questions they’ll need to answer if they expect to make the NCAA Tournament. A sweep however, would be absolutely devastating in terms of digging a hole for either team.
In all seriousness, will the SEC have a down year (compared to recent dominance) this year? Maybe. It’s inevitable they will eventually, time will tell if it’s 2026.
But to “loosen its grip” will require a lot (not just 5-10) teams making major investment it historically hasn’t.

Best Matchup: Ole Miss-Texas pitching
Only one of these teams is ranked currently, but this is still a huge matchup between potential regional host teams. It’s also a phenomenal matchup on the mound and will feature the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked ERAs in the SEC. Texas leads the SEC in ERA (2.42), hits allowed per game (5.90), and opponent’s batting average (.182).
Mississippi is third in the SEC in ERA at 2.68 and second in strikeouts with 224. Cade Townsend has been incredible so far this season posting a 0.48 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

Best Series: Mississippi State at Arkansas
This is the best series on the weekend, and it’s not really close. It’s two top five teams, and two teams that expect to be in Omaha this June. Arkansas is always one of the top teams in not just the conference, but also the country.
Mississippi State had some down years after winning the national title, but there’s a very legitimate case for them to be the highest ranked team in the SEC at the very least.
State has lost 13 of their last 15 games to Arkansas. This is a different team though, and it’s a team that has just two losses on the season. Those were both to top ten teams and by a combined two runs. I like the Bulldogs this weekend.

Who’s on upset alert?
Auburn.
I’m going to regret this, I can already tell.
I don’t think Missouri is a great team. They have played the weakest non-conference schedule in the SEC. They have also won 13 straight games and rank in the top five of the SEC in runs per game (11.0) and batting average (.334). They have also struck out the fewest of any team in the league with 93 on the year.
I think Auburn is really good, but this is way more about the fact that I don’t see another upset on the board that has a chance of happening, except South Carolina at Florida and Alabama at Kentucky. And, considering how bad Alabama has been at the plate and how bad South Carolina has been at, well, everything, I’m gonna go out on a limb. A very regrettable limb.
Missouri had 16 total wins all of last year.
They can improve to 16-2 with a win against Auburn on Friday. 👀 pic.twitter.com/RlSroTtPN3
