COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M men’s basketball head coach Bucky McMillan signed a contract extension that carries through the 2032, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts announced Saturday.
“Bucky McMillan is one of the most innovative minds in college basketball and we are so proud of the success the team had this season,” Alberts said. “He and his staff have built a foundation for Aggie basketball that is centered around relentless energy, modern analytics and a culture players love to be part of. We believe in his vision and Bucky Ball is here to stay.”
In his first season at Texas A&M, McMillan guided the Aggies to their fifth consecutive 20-win season (22-11) and a fourth-place finish in the SEC after being predicted to finish 13th prior to the season. They earned an NCAA Tournament berth for the fourth straight year and the 18th time in program history. The Maroon & White closed out the regular season ranking among the top-15 teams in the country in scoring offense (86.1), assists (18.1), 3-pointers made (10.8) and bench points (35.6). In SEC play the Aggies also boasted the third-best defensive efficiency (111.6) and the best 3-point defense (30.3), according to KenPom.
“Texas A&M is a special place that is full of pride and tradition,” McMillan said. “This is a community that wants to win and the way people support each other is what makes Texas A&M such a special place. This tremendous support is integral to the program we are building. What we were able to accomplish this year is just the beginning of what we believe we can achieve in Aggieland. I am beyond grateful for the support and friendship of so many since arriving in College Station. I am especially grateful for Trev Alberts and the Board of Regents for this opportunity. We do not take it lightly, and we are excited to continue to build Aggie basketball into a program that all Aggies can be proud of.”
The Aggies’ 22 wins were the second-most by a coach in their first year at Texas A&M, while the 11 conference victories were the most since Shelby Metcalf went 13-1 in the Southwest Conference in his first season at the helm (1963-64). McMillan became just the fourth coach in Texas A&M history to make the NCAA Tournament in his first season in Aggieland and the second since the expansion to 64 teams in 1985 (Mark Turgeon 2007-08). His first-year squad set a number of single-season school records, including points (2,927), scoring average (86.1), 3-pointers made (360) and 100-point games (6).
