This was the best slate of games in the three weeks of conference play we’ve had in the SEC. It did not live up to the hype. It did however, leave a lot of one sided rivalries with smiles on their faces. We’re not quite at the halfway point of the season, but March is over. For some teams it’s time to panic and for others it might not be too early to start looking at airfare to Nebraska in mid-June.
Here’s our SEC baseball weekend recap.
No Surprises Here
Mississippi State and Texas felt like the two best teams in the league before the weekend and it definitely feels that way after.
Both squads won their big rivalry series. For Texas it came in the form of a sweep of No. 8 Oklahoma. Beyond being a big deal because of the logos on the caps, it also marked their second straight series win over a top ten opponent. That includes five straight wins dating back to last weekend’s series at Auburn. Texas has been the best team in the country. I don’t care about UCLA, or their incredible shortstop whose name I can’t pronounce or spell.
Then there’s Mississippi State who went on the road to Ole Miss and reminded the Rebels that they’re still little brother on the diamond. Mississippi State was one of five SEC teams that swept this weekend and arguably none of them mattered more to a program or its fans than that one. There just aren’t any glaring weaknesses on this State team right now. They pitch extremely well. They lead the conference in hitting and were simply dominant baseball’s version of the Egg Bowl.

Surprised, Shocked, or both?
Florida and Alabama squared off a week ago in a series that felt like it was sending each team in different directions. Florida was swept in Tuscaloosa and then looked at a trip to Fayetteville to face No. 4 Arkansas a week later.
The Gators have talent. Most Kevin O’Sullivan teams are loaded with it. They’ve struggled with putting that together with onfield results consistently. That was not the case this weekend. The Gators swept Arkansas with relative ease and made a statement that they aren’t going anywhere. Through three series in SEC play, they’ve had three sweeps. Two of which they won and the other resulting in three losses to Alabama. Leaving Fayetteville with a 6-3 SEC record is huge for their postseason chances and momentum.

Speaking of that team that swept Florida, what in the world has gotten into Alabama? The Tide hosted Auburn and won the series against an Auburn team that has taken a drastic turn in the last nine days.
Auburn went into their Texas series with a huge midweek win against a top five Georgia Tech team. They then beat a top five Texas team in game one of their series. Since that walk-off win they have lost five straight games. That includes the three straight they lost in Tuscaloosa to what now appears to be one of the hottest teams in the conference. Alabama was able to make Auburn look anemic at the plate holding them to four runs on the weekend.

Walking Off Rocky Top
Let’s take a second to appreciate that I almost went with “Walk-y Top” as the walk-off themed pun but didn’t. That’s called growth. Speaking of growth, there’s a growing frustration in Knoxville in year one of the Josh Elander era.
Vanderbilt swept the Vols in Nashville in an epic three game series that was decided by just four runs on three separate walk-off wins for the Commodores. Vanderbilt desperately needed a good showing in this series after getting swept last weekend by Mississippi State. It felt like a huge series for both teams though, where the one thing you had to avoid a sweep.
With LSU coming to town next weekend, it’s time to panic in Knoxville.
Bat Flip of the year nominee
Seth Dardar hit a go-ahead three-run home run on Sunday versus Kentucky. It put LSU ahead for good in a rubber match at Alex Box Stadium. To quote my boss, Rivers Hughey, “the bat flip almost went as far as the home run.”

Looking ahead
With the weekend coming to an end, what midweek series should we all be looking forward to? That’s simple. Head to Atlanta for a (likely) top ten matchup for the second time this season between Georgia Tech and Auburn. Depending on who you ask, midweek games don’t matter that much, but this feels very much like a Super Regional level matchup with those two programs. It should be a good one.
