Every week it seems that whatever we think we know in SEC baseball comes crashing down and proves we hardly knew anything at all. That was definitely the case this week, as two of the top teams in the conferences combined for four losses on the weekend. Let’s get to it.
Here are our SEC Baseball rankings for the first week of April.
1. Georgia
We are playing with fire right out of the gate.
Texas is still the highest ranked SEC team in the conference in every major poll publication. Georgia, however, is coming off their first road series win at Mississippi State since 2004, and they did so by sweeping the Bulldogs. They have the outright lead in the conference standings and a road sweep against a top five team has to matter. That’s why they’re number one.
Georgia wins the finale and they sweep #4 Mississippi State at Dudy Noble.

2. Texas
Texas won their series against South Carolina, but they did so in a very underwhelming fashion.
They lost the Thursday night opener to the worst team in the league, and even the wins weren’t as emphatic as you would have expected. Still, the Longhorns are one of the best teams in the country, and maybe they were just overlooking a team on the road.
3. Alabama
I don’t love putting Alabama here because it feels like they are not better than Mississippi State, but it’s hard to rank them lower than a team that got swept, especially since they won a road series against the No. 11 team in the country.
For now, Alabama belongs in the three spot, and that’s also where they are in the conference standings this week. It was a great series win where they needed their pitching to be on as their bats were silenced a bit in the final two games.

4. Mississippi State
I’m still not hitting the panic meter on Mississippi State. They certainly would make me feel better if they had scratched out a win on the weekend, but this is still one of the most talented teams in the country.
Keep in mind they are still in year one of a new coach, and have been consistently ranked in the top ten all season long. Getting swept by Georgia will most likely be one of the best things that happens to this team in the long run.
5. Auburn
I have a hard time believing any of the projections that Auburn isn’t a regional host at the end of the season. They had a very bad two week stretch against Texas, Alabama, and Georgia Tech, and there are definitely concerns for them. The pitching staff, however, is good enough to get them deep into the post season.

6. Texas A&M
This team continues to fly under the radar. They won another series over Vanderbilt this weekend, and they are currently in a three way tie for fourth place in the conference at 25-6.
They continue to punish the baseball, ranking third in the league in batting average (.322) and home runs (66).
7. LSU
Leave it to LSU to wait until Holy Week to resurrect this team. Since last Sunday they have three wins in four games against SEC opponents, and all three came when they were down by four runs or more.
They have come on strong at the plate despite not being where they want to be. They rank seventh in batting average at .287 which may not seem like much, but that’s a big deal considering they ranked 14th or worse just a few weeks ago.

8. Ole Miss
I feel like Ole Miss baseball is how my sixth grade teachers described me – so close to reaching their potential if they just stopped acting up.
Ole Miss got a massive series win at Florida, including the series clincher when they were down 2-0 in the ninth inning. They still have a ways to go, but they continue to show they can win if they put their minds to it.

9. Florida
The most erratic and enigmatic team is back at it again. Florida hosted Ole Miss this weekend fresh off a series sweep at Arkansas. They lost in dramatic fashion at home.
10. Arkansas
This will be the hill I die on this baseball season – Arkansas is not very good. That’s all I have to say about that.
The Bottom Six
- Oklahoma
- Vanderbilt
- Missouri
- Kentucky
- Tennessee
- South Carolina
