LSU donned helmets and shoulder pads for a crisp spring morning work out on Tuesday.
Absent from the activities were quarterback Sam Leavitt and defensive captain Whit Weeks. Leavitt posted on Instagram that he had pins removed from his surgically repaired foot over the weekend. Weeks has attended multiple practices as an observer, but I did not see him on Tuesday.
BAKER BACK AND FORTH
I’ve been keeping an eye on defensive coordinator Blake Baker throughout the spring. It’s very clear he’s approaching practice differently that he did in the past.
With Chris Kiffin working with the linebackers, Baker is free to roam. And roam he does. In the 20 minutes we were allowed to watch, Baker worked with different levels of the defense.
In period two, he worked with PJ Woodland and Aidan Anding on the quick passing game and reading the quarterback. They were the only two corners with him. Corey Raymond worked with the rest.
Baker left that drill and went to the safety drills where they were working on footwork and tackling. He gave his two cents rep by rep.
After that period, he worked with CJ Jimcoily, Aiden Hall and Dashawn Spears for a period. Those three are STARS in the defensive alignment.
The final media period, the secondary ran a shell coverage walkthrough, and Baker directed the entire drill from the quarterback position.
So, he went: corners, safeties, STARs, secondary over the course of 20 minutes. He’s very clearly in a CEO role on the practice field while Chris Kiffin coaches his former position group in individual drills.
TIGHT END
Both Trey’Dez Green and Malachi Thomas were in no contact jerseys at tight end. They were participating but had the yellow jerseys on.
OFFENSIVE LINE SHUFFLE
The first offensive line made a change at left guard. Bo Bordelon stepped in for Devin Harper. The other four “starters” remained. That’s Jordan Seaton, Braelin Moore, Aliou Bah and Weston Davis.
The second offensive line was (L-to-R): Brysten Martinez, Devin Harper, William Satterwhite, Ja’Quan Sprinkle and Darrin Stray.
PLAY BY PLAY
We always six snaps of light contact 11-on-11.
- Winnie Watkins caught a crossing pattern over the middle from Landen Clark.
- Clark designed quarterback draw
- Sideline catch by Malik Elzy
- Toss right to Caden Durham
- Dive to Durham
- Pass break up by Deuce Geralds at the line.
Of note, Geralds looped from his left defensive tackle spot to the right side of the defensive front to swat the pass down.
Also, Durham darted up field on the dive play and was stopped about 15 yards downfield. He immediately put the ball down on the hash as to help the official spot it quickly. That’s a Kiffin offense staple.
Media returns to the practice field on Thursday.
