The signing of cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. brings the New Orleans Saints more competition at the boundary corner spot and could help the Saints see some impactful developmental leaps from incumbent corners Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley.
During Emerson’s introductory Zoom press conference, he made it clear that the Saints really only spoke with him regarding boundary corner work when discussing their vision of his fit with the defense.
With that, the corner will be able to compete as an experienced veteran, driving the growth of last year’s top cornerbacks.
If Emerson were to win a starting role on the outside, it could open up a chance for Riley to shift inside, a responsibility he celebrated the idea of during his introductory draft-day presser last year.
Beyond that, the starting caliber corners also help to push the development of the team’s young wide receiver group.
New Orleans will see no shortage of opportunities for their three top coverage players, but also won’t be disappointed by the talent.
