It’s the final weekend of the SEC baseball regular season. Here’s a look at what you need to know for the big finale before Hoover.
Off and running
Usually this is reserved for the select few series that start a day early during the season. This week however, it’s everyone. Getting an extra day’s rest before the SEC Baseball Tournament starts in Hoover next Tuesday was at the top of everyone’s to-do list this weekend.
The writing is on the wall for several of the teams in the league. Missouri and South Carolina’s postseason chances have been gone since basically opening day or a few weeks ago depending on the level of optimism one might have. Vanderbilt and LSU each had a path to make their 20th and 14th consecutive postseason respectively, but each has squandered that away pretty badly. LSU has lost 13 of their last 16 games in SEC play, and Vanderbilt’s series loss to Missouri all but drove the final nail in their coffin.
Best Series
It’s wild that the top two teams in the conference are facing off in the final weekend of the year with such little hype around the series. Georgia travels to Auburn for a showdown of top five teams and the No. 1 and No. 2 seed in the SEC tournament. Georgia has already wrapped up the regular season title and won the opening game of the series 2-1 on Thursday.
The Dawgs continue to show that they can win in multiple ways. They can swing it better than any team in the country and have led the nation in home runs for the entire season. Dan Jackson was the hero once again on Thursday with a game tying mammoth shot over the left field wall at Auburn. The pitching was the real story in game one though, as the Dawgs surrendered just one hit over the final 4+ innings.
The Bulldogs and Tigers will face off two more times on Friday and Saturday.
Acronym day at the ballpark
Besides corporate America, few organizations love an acronym more than college baseball. The SEC’s RPI, SOS and DSR metrics have been followed closely over the last several months and will be huge factors going into the postseason seeding for each team that ends up making the tournament. As of today it looks like 12 of the 16 teams will make the postseason.
The teams that need the most help right now are Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Kentucky is projected as one of the last four teams in and is hosting Arkansas this weekend. The Cats won game one on Thursday and got a six spot boost after their win in game one up to No. 27. The threshold for relevancy for the postseason is No. 60.
Here’s a look at everyone’s current acronym ranking.
