No position on the New Orleans Saints’ 2026 depth chart has more competition than wide receiver. The team is currently carrying 13 wideouts going into OTAs. Teams typically keep five or six receivers on their 53-man roster, which means there will be a lot of competition among the group throughout OTAs, minicamp and training camp.
One element that will be a major factor in the decision will be which pass-catchers have the ability to make plays from multiple alignments. Versatility will be the key for the team’s deep crop of wide receivers.
Being able to contribute from X, Z and F alignments will be critical.
- X – Split End: The wideout that lines up on the weak side of the offense (opposite the tight end) on the line of scrimmage. Usually seen as the top option, runs possession routes but benefits from being able to threaten downfield as well. Will often be looked to in short-yardage situations on quick in- or out-breaking routes.
- Z – Flanker: The receiver that lines up on the strong side (same side as the tight end) and starts snaps about a yard behind the line of scrimmage. This receiver is typically a speedy field-stretcher that can clear out opportunities for others or threaten deep. A common in-breaking route collection here as well.
- F – Slot: Usually a shiftier wide receiver or a bigger-bodied option with box-out capabilities. Will line up in between a wideout and the offensive line. This position requires good short-area quickness, an expanded route tree and some physical ability to operate when space is congested.
Saints wideouts Chris Olave, Devaughn Vele and Jordyn Tyson have all already proven a propensity, at the NFL or collegiate levels, to be playmakers at all three spots.
For the additional wideouts, including rookies Bryce Lance, Barion Brown and Brock Rechstiener, OTAs and camp will provide them an opportunity to showcase their abilities in the various areas. The more spots a player can take snaps from, the more competitive they will be in a deep room.
The same is true for the veteran receivers participating in the battle, as well.
Head coach Kellen Moore’s offense requires a lot of versatility and could be maximized with strategic personnel rotation. A player proving that they can be a part of the rotation from all three of the aforementioned alignments, with additional chances to impress by lining up in-line or in the backfield, will be the one that sets themself apart from the crowd.
