NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints announced a key roster move on Monday afternoon.

The team has waived center Connor McGovern. The transaction indicates a rather important return for New Orleans could be on the way.

McGovern started five games for the Saints at center as one of the three starters the team has fielded this season. McGovern’s waving likely indicates the return of starting center Erin McCoy.

The Saints also got lineman Shane Lemieux back from Injured Reserve last week. He was the second of three players to start at the position.

McCoy suffered a groin injury that required surgery following the Week 3 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. He had been on Injured Reserve until returning to practice last week. Now it appears likely he’ll be back in action as early as this weekend’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

The original target return date shared with LouisianaSports.net by a team source was the Week 13 game against the Los Angeles Rams. That would have allowed McCoy the Saints open date to continue recovery. However, it now looks like McCoy may end up beating that return timeline.

As for McGovern, it would not be surprising to see him land back with New Orleans as a practice squad addition if the space becomes available. McGovern was signed by the Saints off of the New York Jets practice squad after Lemieux was added to Injured Reserve.
