Bill Belichick, the greatest coach in NFL history, is officially the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The ink has dried on the paper, and the eight-time Super Bowl winner was introduced to the media officially on Thursday.
The former frontman for the Patriots dynasty received what was originally reported as a three-year deal for $10 million per year. That has actually changed and is officially a deal for five years. He becomes the eighth coach in FBS to make at least eight figures annually.
The official contract details that were laid out include several incentives and performance-based bonuses for games won, conference titles and potential postseason success. However, one detail was very peculiar and could lead to him going right back to the NFL if presented with the opportunity.
His buyout from the University is $10 million effective immediately. However, after June 1, 2025, it drastically reduces to just $1 million.
That means there’s a potential scenario that Bill Belichick could leave Chapel Hill before he ever coaches a game, and it would only cost his suitor $1 million. That’s less than a quarterback in the transfer portal.
Wild times in college football.
