Falcons Deal for Elite Rusher

08/15/2024
Judon Sack

By Ross Jackson

For a team that almost entirely ignored its defense all offseason, the Atlanta Falcons have made one of the NFC South division’s biggest moves. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Falcons landed pass rusher Matt Judon from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2025 third-round selection.

Atlanta was a in dire need of pass rush help all offseason and finally got what they were looking for this week. The team totaled 42 sacks last season, which was a major upgrade from the combined 39 they compiled in 2022 and 2023.

The 32-year-old pass rusher only appeared in four games last season with the Patriots, but still totaled 4.5 sacks. He was continuing a hit streak off of 2022’s outstanding 15.5-sack season. After four straight Pro Bowl seasons, Judan suffered a torn biceps which ended his 2023 campaign early.

This addition should be particularly concerning for the New Orleans Saints who have struggled to get consistent production from their offensive line throughout training camp. While rookie tackle Taliese Fuaga has settled in well at left tackle, former first-round pick Trevor Penning has been far from dependable on the right side.

Judan spent 69% of his snaps in 2022 playing over the right tackle. This adds another premier edge rusher that will be pursuing Saints quarterback Derek Carr from that side in 2024. Not welcome news as New Orleans still looks to solidify their line.
