Drew Brees has cast his vote for the next Saints head coach.
SaintsWire’s Chrissy Froyd spoke with former Saints quarterback Drew Brees and during the conversation, Brees opened up about why he believes that Aaron Glenn would be his choice for the next head coach in New Orleans.
“The first guy who comes to my mind is Aaron Glenn,” Brees said. “Arguably, one of the greatest defensive backs to ever play the game. I played against him. I was a teammate of his too. He’s a leader of men. He garners a ton of respect. He knows the game. He is highly competitive.”
Brees also mentioned Glenn’s ability to connect with players, teach and build a reliable staff. All common threads with other praise Glenn has received.
Former Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma shared similar sentiments with Kyle Odegard of SportsLens.
“They had a coach who’s done a phenomenal job in Detroit now in Aaron Glenn,” Vilma said. “He was there with the Saints under Sean Payton. I like that hire because Aaron Glenn is about developing players. He’s about structure, organization and not that other coaches aren’t, but you can see proof in the pudding of what he’s done in Detroit.”
That’s now two Saints legends casting their vote for Glenn this offseason.
When it comes to in-house prospects, Brees went in a different direction than many might think. In an unexpected venture away from interim head coach Darren Rizzi, Brees reportedly told Floyd that the coach he’d like to see take the helm is offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Brees told Froyd that he loves the offense in New Orleans. But it takes much more than scheme to be an effective head coach.
