METAIRIE, La. — With a Monday night game on the way, the New Orleans Saints’ practice week kicked off a day later than usual. The bonus day gave the team a little more time to rest and recover, but a pair of absences are still sure to draw some attention.

Here is the attendance from the open portion of Thursday’s practice:

Not seen:

QB Derek Carr

RB Alvin Kamara

DE Chase Young

Sidework:

WR Chris Olave

Observing:

WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

New:

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (No. 23)

The presence of Olave is quite the development. Hes been spotted on the sideline a couple times in sweats watching on, but Thursday he was in a jersey and helmet catching passes from training staff on the field. Good news for the young wideout who certainly has an intent to try to get back in the field after taking a scary hit earlier this season.

Just because he is back in the field working off to the side at practice does not guarantee that he’ll make a return this season. But it’s a positive display of progress for his improving situation nonetheless.

It’s of no surprise to not see Carr again, considering the recent reports that his return this year is unlikely. The Saints are expected to name rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler their starter this week.

Kamara is dealing with a groin adductor injury that could potentially sideline him this week. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi said on Monday that more imaging and testing was expected for the running back. The Saints signed Edwards-Helaire this week, so they have some additional insurance if the results of those tests don’t come back promising.

The absence of Young is a bit concerning, but it’s unclear the reason why he was not seen. Last week, Kamara missed early practices in the week with illness. Perhaps the same or similar situation is going on with Young, who met with the media on Monday via video conference. That is typically a positive indication.

Valdes-Scanting was observing off to the side. He took a big hit against the Washington Commanders last weekend. While he did return to the game, there may have been an injury or soreness that was discovered earlier this week. It would not be surprising to see him back and participating in the coming days.
