NEW ORLEANS — With a sudden change at head coach for the New Orleans Saints just a matter of weeks ago, it may seem odd to be talking about setting records. But that’s just how good things have been going for interim head coach Darren Rizzi thus far.
Rizzi already etched his name into the Saints’ franchise history books with his second consecutive win to start his coaching tenure with the Week 12 victory over the Cleveland Browns. That win made Rizzi only the second coach in Saints history to start 2-0, the first being Sean Payton back in 2006.
Now, against the Los Angeles Rams, Rizzi could become the second coach to go 3-0 with another win. Doing so, would put him in position to do what no coach has ever done in the franchise’s history. With a weak New York Giants team set to host New Orleans in Week 14, Rizzi could go 4-0 to start his head coaching tenure with the team.
The franchise-first would further entrench Rizzi as a viable candidate for the long-term coaching job this offseason. He has already made quite a case for himself generating buy-in from the rest of the coaching staff, the player roster and endearing himself to the fan base each and every week.
A win this week would set up the New Jersey-native to soon clinch a start never before seen by a Saints head coach.
