Halftime: LSU 14, Vanderbilt 7

11/23/2024

By Hunt Palmer

Considering the start, LSU is in good shape at halftime leading 14-7.

After five snaps, LSU was down 7-0. The offense quickly went three and out, and the defense yielded a 63-yard bomb for a score on Vanderbilt’s first play from scrimmage.

LSU steadied things with an equalizing touchdown drive thanks to a big catch from Kyren Lacy and a pair of determined plays from Josh Williams including a 20-yard touchdown run.

LSU’s bid to take the lead late in the first quarter was squandered by a failed 4th down and goal from the three yard line. Vanderbilt returned that favor with four and a half minutes to play by failing to covert a 4th and 1 from the Tiger 20.

LSU has run the ball well. Williams and Caden Durham combined to rush 15 times for 104 yards and a pair of scores. Garrett Nussmeier is 14-of-19 for 157 yards.

Vanderbilt makes its money on 3rd downs. They entered the game third in the SEC in conversion rate. The Commodores are 2-for-6 and failed on their only 4th down.

LSU won time of possession 18:31 to 11:29. That’s Vanderbilt’s other trump card.

Truthfully, the first half was one play away from being really good. If LSU converts the 4th and goal, everything is peachy. Rolling up 255 first half yards will work every time. LSU has four plays of over 20 yards. Those empty red zone trips have just been a killer for a month.

Vanderbilt will get the ball to open the half.
