NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints finalized a pair of roster moves Tuesday afternoon, including the addition of a new quarterback.

The team signed veteran quarterback Ben DiNucci and offensive lineman Kyle Hergel to its practice squad. The signing of DiNucci was shared by the signal caller himself earlier in the day.

The signing of the 28-year-old quarterback indicates that New Orleans is at least preparing for the possibility that starter Derek Carr’s hand injury may indeed make him unavailable for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. The Saints are expected to choose between their young options of Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler in regards to who will be prepared to start. DiNucci would likely add an emergency third option if moved to the active roster before kickoff.

Hergel has been a commonly moved player this season on and off of the practice squad. The undrafted free agent offensive lineman is one that the Saints saw a lot of promise in throughout training camp and beyond. That much is clear with the fact that they have kept him close even after moving him off the roster from time to time.

New Orleans will return to practice on Wednesday. At which time the highly-anticipated quarterback decision may have progressed. That is, unless the Saints continue their previous track record of allowing the two to compete. If that ends up being the approach, there may not be a clear decision made until Friday.
